O2 - The hype // O2 - El de moda

I'm not going to lose time talking about ALL what's around O2 and NwAvGuy but you can go to his blog or to Head-Fi to investigate a bit more. For me this is a David vs Goliath scene, but at the end we music lovers are getting better gear at smaller prices and that makes us VERY HAPPY

I pulled the trigger on a JDSLabs O2 amp after considering buying a DIY kit but my soldering skills are below any standard. Come the ready to use version. Since I ordered as soon it was available I had to wait for it 25 days to be shipped all the way down to México. Finally on the first week in January I received a package in my office with the amp.

At that point I had a Fiio e7, Meier Corda Headfive for a while and a TubeMagic D1 too, not high end stuff but each one with very different characteristics. The first thing you notice when you compare the O2 with the D1 is the tight and controlled bass, when you switch from one to the other is very evident the D1 bass is a bloated and not as detailed as in the O2.  Comparing to the Meier HeadFive (not in production anymore only 500 were made) the HeadFive is very close to the O2 but to me there is a very slight diference making it lighter in the bass section, I really cant define exactly but the O2 seems to have more musical sound. I didn't made any extensive comparison with the e7 mainly because I lend it to a friend.

The mid section is incredible on the O2 and the HeadFive, to my ears there is no difference between them. Compared with the D1 the bass tends to leak in to the middle section. The transparency on the O2 and Meier is equivalent but the later with less microdetail because of a noisier background.

Finally the highs both in the O2 and Meier are great, but I can hear a bit of harshness on the Meier and it only happens on certain recordings with the cymbals. I always use the same Megadeth song that always reveals that harshness (Addicted to Chaos from the album Youthanasia) specially in the first bars of the song. The D1 is way behind the other two.

Since I'm not expert reading measurement nor a golden ear audiophile, the amp that I like the most is the one I spend more time with and the O2 is really the most used of the 3.

Being the O2 in the middle of a HUGE controversy I must say that the opinions stated here are 100% based on my humanly biased listening tastes. Do I like the O2? Hell yeah!

Por el momento no voy a perder tiempo hablando sobre TODO lo que ha ocurrido al rededor del O2 y  NwAvGuy  pero si lo deseas puedes ir a su blog o a Head-Fi para investigar lo que está sucediendo. Desde mi perspectiva se trata de la historia bíblica de David y Goliath, al final de cuentas para nosotros, los amantes de la musica, estamos obteniendo mejores equipos por precios menores y eso nos hace MUY FELICES.

"Me aventé" por un amplificador O2 de JDSLabs ensamblado después de considerar adquirir el kit para armar, pero mis habilidades de soldadura son muy inferiores al estándar. Versión ensamblada entonces. Debido a que realicé mi orden en cuanto estuvieron disponibles, tuve que esperar 25 días a que pusieran el ampli en la paquetería a México. En la primera semana de enero recibí el paquete en mi oficina con el O2.

En ese momento contaba con un Fiio e7, un Meier Corda HeadFive y un TubeMagic D1 que aunque son equipos considerados de inicio, cada uno tiene sus propias características. Lo primero que se nota al comparar el O2 con el D1 es lo firme y controlado que son los graves. Al cambiar del O2 al D1 es muy evidente la congestión en estas frecuencias. En comparación con el Meier HeadFive (artículo descountinuado y del que solo se produjeron 500 unidades) la calidad de los graves es muy cercana a la del O2 pero hay una muy ligera diferencia que me cuesta definir con precisión pero hace que este último tenga un sonido más musical. No realicé una comparación con el e7 pues lo presté a un amigo.

Los medios del O2 y del HeadFive son increíbles, no puedo distinguir alguna diferencia entre ellos y la claridad es muy buena y prácticamente equivalente. Comparados con el D1 los graves tienen a meterse en el camino de los medios. Quizás el O2 es ligeramente más "transparente" que el Meier que tiene un fondo menos silencioso.

Finalmente hay una ligera diferencia entre los agudos del O2 y el Meier que solo se revela en algunas grabaciones. Con el Meier en estas frecuencias hay un poco de aspereza sobre todo con los platillos. Para encontrar este detalle siempre escucho la misma pieza de Megadeth la cual tiene esta particularidad sobre todo en los primeros compases (Addicted to Chaos from the album Youthanasia). El D1 está bastante detrás, con más estridencia y aspereza en los agudos que los otros 2 amplificadores.

Debido a que no soy un experto interpretando mediciones electrónicas, ni poseo un oído privilegiado, creo que el mejor amplificador es con el que paso más tiempo y definitivamente he usado el O2 más que cualquiera.

Debido a toda la controversia alrededor de el O2, aclaro que las opiniones en esté documento están basadas 100% en mis gustos humanamente sesgados.  ¿Me gusta el O2? Por supuesto!
